It took 6 years for Robert De Niro to envision his brainchild, The Greenwich Hotel. And it will come as no surprise, once you’re privy to the serious detail that went into creating it. Whilst the building may appear as though it’s been standing for decades, it is in fact a more recent build—a single-storey parking garage in another life. Various materials and techniques were used with attention to old-time craftsmanship (both externally and internally). The antique mirrors sourced from the Flatiron Building for one.

The hotel is a lot of things; eclectic, unassuming, bohemian, rustic, but most importantly intimate. During the winter holidays, Christmas trees are decorated by the hotel’s team for every suite and warm cookies are provided as a welcome amenity. A complimentary minibar is stocked with treats selected by management; Uncle Jerry’s pretzels (a personal favorite of Ira Drukier, the hotel’s co-founder) and Coca-Cola shipped in from Mexico (as the team prefers the pure cane sugar variety).

Locanda Verde, located within the hotel, is Chef Andrew Carmellini’s soul-satisfying, rustic, Italian taverna welcoming guests and locals morning, noon, and night since 2009.
