We had the great pleasure of taking a pre-opening tour—construction workers, hard hats and all—even in an incomplete state, it was a real delight for the senses. After extensive refurbishments, and additions to the original structure, opening on October 16, 2023. Located in NoMad (North of Madison Square Park), on 5th Avenue (of course) & 28th Street, a short walk from the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Garden, not to be confused with the park (also very close-by).

The hotel is housed in one of New York City’s architectural jewels, a Gilded Age mansion built in 1859. The design, led by Martin Brudnizki, is an eclectic exploration based on the owner’s travels around the world. Oriental and Moroccan influences are prevalent, and married seamlessly with the tortoise motif that adorns the hotel.

There are 153 rooms split among two buildings—the tower and the mansion—yet the hotel feels as intimate as if there were 50 guest-rooms. In-room minibar snacks are complementary, and suites include butler services.

Outside of your room, discover a multitude of welcoming spaces to socialize, including the greatly intimate and deeply poetic Portrait Bar (lined with first editions), and the romantic Café Carmellini, named after and captained by James Beard Award-winning chef Andrew Carmellini, with its (not surprisingly) exquisite interior and delectable menu featuring classic Italian and French dishes… Oh là là.
