A 200-year-old estate located in Portugal's Alentejo region. Sao Lourenco Do Barrocall is a luxury boutique hotel and organically certified working farm set amidst ancient oaks, olive groves, and vineyards about two hours from Lisbon airport. The retreat has been in the same family for two centuries, and is now in the hands of eighth-generation owner José Antonio Uva who spent 14 years restoring the property before reopening it as a hotel in 2016. Once an ancient farming village, the hotel offers 40 types of accommodation: 22 rooms, 2 suites, 16 cottages—all with private terraces or direct access to patios with magnificent views of the hotel’s grounds.

The rooms are minimalist, light filled and airy; staying here is really special, a home away from home that comforts you immediately. For a bit more room, the cottages are great, we’d recommend a one bedroom or two bedroom cottage depending how many guests you have with you—the meadow views past the outdoor pool set you right into vacation mode.

The two restaurants onsite make an effort to only use ingredients from the area, which are ever so fresh. Only problem here is that you’ll sorely miss them when you have to leave. For some extra rest and relaxation, the Susanne Kaufmann spa offers a number of spa treatments, including massage and other skin treatments using her signature all natural, organic skincare products. Guests can also enjoy two outdoor swimming pools (one for adults and another for children), a winery—wine tasting, and stables.
