The Hotel Chelsea is more than a New York City institution, it’s a resident. A long-time haven for creatives, the legendary hotel was reborn in 2022 by the team behind The Ludlow and The Bowery. Its history (dating back to 1884) is filled with eccentric, even peculiar stories—playing host to some of New York’s most colorful guests and residents. The Queen Anne Revival and Victorian Gothic building is where Andy Warhol filmed his well-known Chelsea Girls. Mapplethorpe, Patti Smith, Mark Twain, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Sam Shepherd, Jack Kerouac, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen (a ghostly story here), Edie Sedgemick, Nico, Dylan Thomas, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, Pink Floyd, Marlyin Monroe and Arthur Miller, Jimi Hendrix, Stanley Kubrick… and the list goes on.
The interiors: vintage glamor meets upscale bohemian. Even the use of animal prints find a tasteful place on fabrics. Many of the 158 rooms include bathtubs, and suites (which account for 30%) are equipped with kitchens and washers/dryers. Room rates start from as low as $250 per night, up to around $5K per night. If you’re fortunate enough, try to snag a room with the original stained-glass and an iron balcony overlooking 23rd St.
The hotel has two restaurants and a bar—the most famous and historical (out of the three) being Spanish restaurant and cocktail lounge, El Quijote. Café Chelsea, also located within the hotel, is an all day bistro serving French American cuisine. And lastly, the beautiful European-style Lobby Bar (frequented by hip locals) focuses on cocktails and small plates. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s worth stopping by for a drink or even a coffee—the decor is spectacular, it’s a high-end vibe but not pretentious, and no dress code. Soon, the hotel will open a spa, but the rooftop fitness center just recently opened.
A noteworthy detail: the hotel entertains room requests (though they cannot be guaranteed). Did you read ‘Just Kids’ and want to stay in the room where its author, Patti Smith, lived with Robert Mapplethorpe? Feel free to inquire.
