Chateau Royal, a former Stasi spy base turned contemporary hotel in the heart of Berlin Mitte. The 93-room hotel which opened in September 2022, has been reimagined in homage to bohemian Berlin at the turn of the 19th century—drawing on materials popular in the heyday. Guests will enjoy  a stylish lobby, hotel bar, restaurant, private dining room, fireside lounge, winter garden (courtyard), and rooftop terrace. 

All 93 guest rooms and suites are unique. As a signature, different contemporary artists have contributed a piece of work to each room for permanent display. Individually designed with high-end materials and custom-made furniture mixed with selected vintage pieces, they boast classic herringbone parquet throughout. Soaring ceilings between three and four meters (10-13 feet) give a generous sense of space, and large windows provide lots of natural light. The bathrooms feature hand-made Craquelé tiles, heated floors and walk-in rain showers. We love that every effort has been made to ensure all rooms are free of plastic and are made from sustainably sourced, natural materials and are cleaned chemical-free to the highest standard.

Owner Stephan Landwehr’s connection to Berlin’s contemporary scene goes back to the 1980s, when he started out as a picture framer; later, as a restaurateur, he opened Grill Royal, which became a popular artists’ haunt. His partner, Kirsten, co-curated the spaces, which flow from the bar through a darkened fireplace room to the restaurant.
